The M1 in Leicestershire was closed in both directions after a car swerved off the motorway and hit a tree, leaving a woman with life-threatening injuries. The southbound side re-opened not long after the collision, which involved a black Ford Mondeo and no other vehicles, but the northbound side remained shut until 5.30pm today (Sunday, May 8).
Leicestershire Police said in a tweet at 11am: “Please be advised that the road is closed due to a police incident. Please find an alternative routes – updates will follow. Thank you for your patience.”
Google Maps showed that by 11.10am there was a three-mile queue on the northbound carriageway. There were further long queues on roads around the Leicester area because of the closure, including the M69, the A50 and the A46.
