Jurgen Klopp has agreed a new contract which will keep him and his key backroom staff at Liverpool until at least 2026.

The Reds manager accepted a fresh four year deal which will replace the remaining two years of his current agreement, and run until 2026, with the option left open of extending beyond that date.

Mirror Sport understands that it was Klopp himself who approached his owners to say he was ready to accept the open-ended offer to stay with the Anfield club, which was put on the table at the start of this campaign, and has remained ever since.

Previously, the German coach had declined to discuss an extension, insisting that his plan was to leave at the end of his current deal in 2024, and even as recently as last month he stated publicly that leaving them was still his intention. But Klopp has felt refreshed and invigorated by his side’s incredible quadruple challenge this season, and increasingly in the past few weeks, he had begun to realize that he can’t turn his back on such an outstanding group of players and staff, and on the Liverpool fans who adore him.

The 54 year old has indicated that he wants to not only stay and win more with this current group – who are on the verge of history as they stand within touching distance of an historic quadruple – but also to continue building for the future. Klopp has quietly been extending his squad to achieve remarkable depth with younger signings and recruits from the club’s academy, and he wants to continue that process, to leave Liverpool in rude health when he finally does leave.

He has been promised support from the club in the transfer market to continue shaping Anfield’s future, and there are also indications that his judgment on contracts will be backed. His famous front three of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all have little more than a year left on their current deals, and Klopp has made no secret of his desire for them to get fresh agreements. The manager’s own deal, which gives a sense of stability to the club, can only help in contract talks, and is likely to increase the chances of agreements in the summer.

Klopp indicated early in the week that he was ready to extend, and Liverpool moved swiftly into action, with Mike Gordon, president of club owners FSG, flying in on Wednesday to finalize contracts. Klopp’s agent Marc Kosicke also flew in from Germany to conclude the legal aspects of the new contract in person, and we understand the agreement was reached on Wednesday.

The agent was invited into the Liverpool boardroom for the Champions League semi final against Villarreal, and after concluding the agreement, it is understood he and Michael Edwards, the club’s Sporting Director, along with Gordon stayed after the pulsating game to celebrate in the boardroom.

Liverpool will confirm the contract within the next few hours, and Klopp is expected to speak on his decision to stay on Friday, with the news offering the perfect boost at exactly the right time for the team’s remarkable quadruple bid. And he will make clear his simply couldn’t turn his back on his players and staff when they believe they have so much more to achieve, explaining that he still has a massive appetite to help his players write their names in Anfield history.
