Woman in her 30s dies after M1 tree crash which shut motorway for hours

A woman has died after a crash that shut the M1 throughout most of yesterday. The collision involved one car, which came off the northbound carriageway and hit a tree near Leicester.

The road was shut from about 10.45am into yesterday evening while police and other emergency services dealt with the incident and crash convicts carried out a full examination of the scene. There were long queues on the northbound M1 and the southbound side was also shut for two brief periods during the day.

The crash happened just north of junction 21a. There were knock-on affects for other roads in Leicester and elsewhere as the M1 traffic was diverted via the A46 and A50 to rejoin at junction 22.

Leicestershire Police are appealing for witnesses – particularly those who may have dashcam footage showing the crash or the vehicle traveling on the M1 beforehand. Detective Constable Charlotte Wright, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Sadly our enquiries are now centerd around a fatal collision.

“While we have spoken to a number of people, I would still ask that anyone who was traveling on the motorway yesterday morning and saw what happened or who has dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.

“I would also like to speak to anyone who saw the black Ford Mondeo prior to the collision occurring.”

The male driver of the Ford was also taken to hospital with injuries. He is said to be in a stable condition in hospital. You can pass on information to the police via their webpage here, quoting incident 213 of 8 May. Alternatively call 101.
